 Management of the Recycling Center

The A-L Recycling Center is a  multi-material buy-back center that is owned and operated by Keep Athens-Limestone Beautiful.  Center operations are overseen by the Athens-Limestone Recycling Board.  The Recycling Center manager handles day-to-day operations and supervision of center employees.  The Recycling Center works with the City of Athens in a cooperative effort to continue curbside recycling for city residents. All materials collected at curbside are processed at our center.  They also work with the Limestone County Commission in a cooperative effort to place and service recycling trailers throughout the county.  Please click on  What's Recyclable to see a list of items accepted at the Recycling Center.

Athens Curbside Recycling:

The Recycling Center works with the City of Athens by accepting and processing all materials picked up at curbside.  Green recycling bins are available to any Athens resident by visiting the Reycling Center, calling the Recycling Coordinator, or calling the Streets and Sanitation Department at 233-8747.  Curbside recycling is picked up by a separate truck on the same day as your regular garbage pickup.  If you have any questions about curbside service, contact the Street and Sanitation Department.  The following items can be recycled at curbside:

  • Newspaper
  • Junk Mail and Magazines
  • Metal Cans
  • Aluminum Cans
  • Glass:  clear, brown, and green
  • Plastic #1 and #2 only
  • Used Motor Oil - place in a see-through container with a tight lid.

Labels do NOT need to be removed.  Please rinse out cans, jars, and bottles.  Please do not put your recyclables in plastic bags -- one plastic bag can contaminate a truckload of paper.

County Recycling and Location of Trailers:

Recycling Center services 8 county trailers strategically placed throughout Limestone County.  For your convenience, these trailers are located at the following locations, and can be used by the public:

  • East Limestone High School
  • Creekside Elementary School
  • Cedar Hill Elementary
  • Owens Elementary
  • West Limestone High School
  • Elkmont High School
  • Johnson Elementary
  • Clements High School

Please do not leave your recyclables in plastic bags.  One plastic bag can contaminate a large amount of paper.

Office Paper and Ink Cartridge Recycling:

Area Businesses are encouraged to recycle office paper and printer cartridges. Recycling staff make periodic rounds to collect recyclables from participating businesses.  Please contact us to join other environmentally responsible businesses and begin recycling your office paper and ink cartridges today!

Cell Phone Recycling:

Working cell phones that have the battery and charger may be turned in at the A-L Recycling Center.  These phones will be given to the Crisis Services office in Athens to be used for abuse victims.  These working phones can be used to dial 911 even without a cell phone plan.

Cardboard Recycling:

The Recycling Center will make periodic rounds to your business and pick up your cardboard.  A wire bin can be provided to you for this purpose.  This is good for the environment and good for YOU!  By breaking down and recycling your cardboard boxes, you may be able to use a smaller dumpster, or have your current dumpster emptied less often, thus saving YOU MONEY!  Contact us today to begin recycling your cardboard.

Fundraising Accounts:

You can set up an account at the Recycling Center for any organization, church, charity, or a personal account.  Anyone bringing in newspaper, cardboard, or aluminum cans can request the money for those items be placed on your account.   Just let us know the first time you bring in these items that you would like to set up an account, and let others know that your account is open. That's all there is to it!  Then just start earning cash!    What items are purchased at the recycling center?  Click here to find out.

Habitat for Humanity:

The A-L Recycling Center is a drop off point for Habitat for Humanity.  The Center accepts aluminum cans and newspaper for the Habitat account. This is a great way to help this organization raise funding.
