Wooping Cranes Visit Wheeler Wildlife Refuge

Whooping Cranes

Approximately 9,000 sandhill cranes are calling the Wheeler Wildlife Refuge home this winter.  If you look carefully, you may be lucky enough to spot one of the seven whooping cranes that have also migrated to this spot.

In 1950, wooping cranes were at an all-time low of 14 birds in the wild.  Currently there are about 400 and only 100 are located on the East Coast.  So to have seven of them here in our Tennessee Valley is a treasure for any birdwatcher!

According to officials at the refuge, two mating pairs are nesting in areas far from the eyes of visitors, however the other three can often be seen...

LOOK WHAT YOU DID! Recycling Saves Trees

Every ton of paper products recycled spares 17 trees from being cut down to make new paper products

Together we recycled 1,907 tons of paper allowing 32,419 trees to remain standing and continue the important environmental work trees are designed to do.

We give little thought to the truth that without our trees, this planet would not be able to support life!  Here are some of the ways trees contribute their life-giving gifts:

  • Trees take in carbon dioxide form our air, which they need to create food for their own growth.
  • Trees give off oxygen during the photosynthesis process (making their food), which allows all life to breathe.  Trees are literally the lungs of the Earth!
  • Trees absorb pollutants...

BUTT....They're So Small!

Cigarette LitterSome people who would never think of littering think nothing of flipping a cigarette butt out of a car window or into the grass.

Cigarette butts might be small, but they are mighty when it comes to the dangers they pose to the environment.

What are cigarette filters made of?  Nearly all cigarette filters are composed of a bundle of 12,000 plastic-like cellulose acetate fibers.

Are cigarette butts biodegradable?   NO! Unlike paper products, they are not biodegradable. It can take years, in some cases up to fifteen, for fibers to decay into a plastic powder that can't be seen. Smokers may not realize that their actions have such a lasting, negative impact on the environment.

What happens to a cigarette butt after it is discarded?

  • Battery Recycling

    Batteries...                            We Take Them ALL!

KALB's Athens-Limestone Recycling Center is now accepting household batteries for recycling.

You'll never have to toss another battery of any kind in your household trash.

Please DO NOT place batteries in your curbside bin or mix with metals at the recycling centers.  When visiting the recycling center, just drop them off in the office for proper handling.

We are very proud of the strides our recycling center management have made to find outlets for additional materials.  We continue to strive to increase the types of materials we accept.

  • Electronics Recycling

    Electronics Accepted Daily!

It is no longer necessary to wait for a special Electronics Recycling Collection day to properly dispose of your old electronics.  They can be brought to the Athens-Limestone Recycling Center Tuesday through Friday during business hours.

More good news!  CRT monitors are now accepted free of charge!  An $8 disposal fee will remain for televisions sets, however all other electronics are accepted free of charge!

  • Aluminum Can Bash

    Recycle CFL's at Lowe's!

Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs (CFL's) can now be recycled at the Lowe's in Athens.

Lowe's has given us a way to keep these bulbs, which contain a small amount of mercury, out of our landfills.

CFL's are the small, curly bulbs.  The long stick lights cannot be recycled here at this time.

Please take advantage of this, and be sure to tell the staff at Lowe's "Thank you for caring about our environment!"
