Earth Day & Outdoor Celebration - Apr 26, 2014
IT'S ALMOST TIME!! It won't be long before the fun and excitement of celebrating our amazing planet comes back to Athens!
KALB will host Big Dave Hollaway, Senior Naturalist at the McDowell Environmental Center who will provide his special brand of fun as he shares his knowledge about the planet we walk on. Hollaway has been with the McDowell Environmental Center for about 11 years and is not a desk sitter. Hollaway's office is the forests, fields, waterfalls, and canyons and his passion is to share a love for the creatures that share our skies and forests.
We are also pleased to announce that Vicky Beckham Smith "The Bat Lady", will be coming from Georgia with her bats to share her expertise on these misunderstood creatures. Vicky, who owns and operates A-Z Animals, presents interesting information-filled environmental education programs on a variety of wildlife subjects, but she is very well known for her expertise on and love of bats.
Jim Swanner of KIN Stables and his horse Rosie will be on hand to perform for you. Jim and Rosie were quite a hit last year. A Limestone County farm will bring two of their favorite Alpacas and share information about these beautiful animals. One of the alpacas is only a year old!
HealthSource will be giving $1/minute massages with all proceeds coming right back to KALB. Plan to enjoy several minutes of bliss!
Lots of exhibitors will be on hand to share information on the environment, earth-friendly products and services, outdoor activities, and healthy living. Jim Swanner and his horse Rosie will be on hand to perform for you, and we are working on having the Alpacas back!
Don't worry about keeping the kids busy! There will be plenty of crafts, games, programs, and activities going on throughout the day. The Middle School Drumline is returning this year for more fun!The kids can join the drummers on their own "drums".
Admission, hot dogs, Pepsi, and snacks and lots of door prizes will be given away. Everyone can enter the door prize drawing simply by learning something new or answering a question. We'll help!
This year, the student competitions with prizes will include a coloring contest for grades K-2, a poster contest for grades 3-5, and a video contest for grades 6-8.
You will find information on each of these contests, including prize details, in the links below:
