Beautification Projects
Triangle Beautification: Beautification Board members, as well as garden clubs and master gardners have landscaped and continue to maintain triangles on two main highways through Athens. The Beautification Board oversees this program. Flowers, shrubs, fertilizers, chemicals and other necessary items are purchased with board funds.
Welcome to Athens Signs: As you enter the City of Athens on US highways 31 or 72, you will find these signs welcoming you to our fair city. These signs were purchased and maintained by the Athens-Limestone Beautification Board. The grounds surrounding these signs are maintained by volunteers and a landscaping firm paid for with board funds.
Downtown Beautification: Take a walk around the Athens Courthouse Square and enjoy the wonderful shops and restaurants available for your shopping and dining pleasure. When you need a break, rest on one of the lovely iron benches positioned around the square. Large flower pots are lovingly maintained by the Beautification Board. These volunteers add seasonal plantings and decorate the pots for the holidays. Most of the pots and benches have been purchased in memory or in honor of a loved one or to recognize an area business.
Cemetery Beautification: Our beautification board, through board funding and grants, have added beauty to places of rest. One example of this board's hard work is Roselawn Cemetery on Hwy. 31. It wasn't too many years ago that this cemetery had little to no landscaping. Over the years, flowering and other trees have been added along this frontage as well as a beautiful, fully landscaped entrance complete with stone pillars. More recently, the Forrest St. entrance to this cemetery has been completely landscaped. Several other city cemeteries have been touched by the hard-working hands of these volunteers.
Beautification Memorial Fund: It is always difficult to lose a friend or loved one. The Beautification Board provides a way to honor the memory of a loved one through the Memorial Fund. A donation to this fund will help insure that the city cemetery of your choise remains a lovely and peaceful place. A notification of your donation will be sent to the family of the deceased.
