Litter is a definite problem in Athens and Limestone County. The Adopt-A-Spot program was created to involve community organizations and individuals in solving the problem.Adopt a spot in the City of Athens, and your non-profit or civic organization can benefit! Groups that commit to clean up their adopted spot once a month (or no less than once every 6 weeks) will be rewarded with a check for $50 after every 3rd cleanup! The money must be sent to a civic or non-profit organization and cannot benefit indivduals.
This reward process allows your group or family to give back to your community through your service while also supporting your favorite local civic or non-profit organization, passing on the ability to do good in Limestone County. The funding used for this program was given to us for this specific purpose and is not money that has been donated to our organization through fundraisers or memberships.
Our community is affected by litter in more ways than you know. It's ugly, we know that. Did you know that heavily littered communities reflect a lack of pride which can affect the decision of businesses considering coming to our area?
KALB encourages businesses, civic groups, youth groups, and individuals to step up and take responsibility for a “spot” in Athens or Limestone County. This is a great way to introduce youth groups to community involvement. Once a person has been involved in a litter cleanup, they are much less likely to litter themselves.
KALB will provide trash bags, gloves, safety vests, and some pick-up sticks for your use in cleaning up your adopted area. The City of Athens will provide an Adopt-A-Spot sign for your area recognizing you or your group for adopting the location. Limestone County will also provide signs, however the reward program is only available for locations within the City of Athens.
KALB staff would be happy to discuss the details of this program with you.
