About Us
On March 15, 1977 Keep Athens-Limestone Beautiful (formerly A-L Clean Community) was chartered as part of the Keep America Beautiful system. This organization's main objectives are to provide educational opportunities that will promote a change in attitude about litter, protecting our environment, and keeping as much waste out of our landfills.
Shortly after the organization was established, an opportunity arose to take on a recycling project which the Athens High School Science Club had been managing. The program became too large for the high school group to maintain, and the KALB Commission believed that the program fits well with goals of the organization.
In 1981, the recycling program had grown to a point that a separate board was created to manage the recycling operations. The Athens-Limestone Recycling Board was created under KALB Commission to provide the proper attention necessary to allow for growth...and did it grow! A few years ago, the recycling center moved from city property off Forrest Street to its current location on Lucas Ferry Road. This move has allowed the recycling center to become a truly impressive operation benefiting the City of Athens, Limestone County, and surrounding communities.
In 1982, the Commission established another board under the KALB umbrella to manage beautification projects. The Athens-Limestone Beautification Board is a very active group of volunteers working hard to provide spots of beauty for all to enjoy. Projects include provision and maintenance of the Welcome to Athens signs, triangle maintenance, beautification of the Courthouse Square, Beautification Awards, and much more.
KALB is grateful for the support given to us from the City of Athens, Limestone County, and concerned citizens. This organization could not experience success without this support and dedicated volunteers.
